How to Recover Photos from a Camera Card (RAW + JPG)

If your DSLR or mirrorless camera shows an empty card, a "No Images" message, or you formatted the card by mistake, the photos are almost certainly still on it. Deleting or quick-formatting a card only marks the space as free — the RAW and JPG data stays there until new frames overwrite it, which is why the first thing you do matters more than anything else.

Stop shooting — take the card out now

Every new frame you shoot writes fresh data onto the exact space your old photos are still sitting in. That is the one action that turns a recoverable card into an unrecoverable one.

  • Power the camera off and eject the card. Don't take "just one more test shot" to see if it works.
  • Don't let the camera repair or re-initialize the card. If it offers to format or rebuild the file system, decline.
  • Don't copy anything back onto the card — no test images, no firmware files, nothing.
  • Read the card on a computer using a card reader (or the camera in mass-storage mode) and scan it from there.

Scanning itself is safe: RecoverHelper opens the card strictly read-only, so a scan can never make the situation worse.

Which scan mode to use for a camera card

Camera cards are almost always formatted FAT32 or exFAT, not NTFS — so the mode that matters here is the signature-based one.

  • Carving Only — the right choice for SD, CF, and other camera cards. It scans the card by file signature and pulls the image data back even when the file system has forgotten the file entirely. Because it works from the raw data, original filenames are not restored in this mode — your DSC_0142.NEF may come back with a generated name. The pixels are intact; the label isn't.
  • Deep Scan — the default. It runs a Quick Scan first, then carves the whole volume by signature. Use it if you're unsure what the card is formatted as, or if you're scanning a drive rather than a card.
  • Quick Scan — reads the NTFS Master File Table and restores original names, folders and timestamps. Useful when you're recovering from an NTFS drive you had already copied the photos to, not from the camera card itself.

Practical rule: card → Carving Only (or Deep Scan), NTFS computer drive → Quick Scan.

Step by step: recover RAW and JPG from the card

  1. Insert the card into a card reader connected to your Windows or Mac computer.
  2. Open RecoverHelper and select the card as the source volume.

Formatted or failing cards

A quick format doesn't erase your photos. If you formatted the card in-camera and it completed almost instantly, that was a quick format — the data is still there and a Carving Only scan will find it. What is not recoverable is a full format or secure erase that deliberately overwrites every sector.

If the card is starting to fail — read errors, the camera calling it corrupted — RecoverHelper is bad-sector tolerant: it skips unreadable areas and keeps going instead of aborting, so a dying card usually still gives up most of its images.
