First: stop writing to the drive
Deleting a video doesn't erase it. The file system only marks the space as free, and the MP4 or MOV data stays on the platters or flash cells until something overwrites it. Every new photo, every new clip, every camera that powers back on and writes a fresh index is a chance to land on top of the footage you want back.
Stop using the drive or card immediately. Take the card out of the camera, unplug the drive, and do the recovery from a computer instead. If the videos lived on your system drive, avoid installing anything new onto it — including the recovery software itself.
One thing you don't have to worry about: RecoverHelper opens the source drive strictly read-only. Scanning can never make the situation worse.
Why videos need carving instead of a filename lookup
Quick Scan works by reading the NTFS Master File Table — the index that stores names, folders and timestamps. When that record still exists, files come back exactly as they were named. But video usually doesn't live on NTFS:
- SD and microSD cards from cameras, drones and dashcams are almost always FAT32 or exFAT — there's no MFT to read.
- USB sticks and action-cam cards are the same story.
- A card that's been formatted in-camera has had its index rewritten, so even where a table exists, your clips are no longer in it.
- Mac APFS and HFS+ disks are recovered by signature as well — the contents come back, but not the original names.
Carving ignores the index entirely. It walks the volume looking for the byte patterns that mark the start of an MP4, MOV, MKV or AVI file and reconstructs from there. The trade-off is honest and worth knowing up front: filenames are not restored in this mode. You get your footage, named generically, which is why previewing before you recover matters.
Which scan mode to run
Pick based on where the video was stored, not on how it was lost:
- Carving Only — the right choice for SD cards, USB sticks, and any FAT32, exFAT or raw volume. It's a pure signature scan, so it skips the pointless step of hunting for an MFT that isn't there.
- Deep Scan — the default, and the one to use on an NTFS drive when you're not sure what state it's in. It runs Quick Scan first, then carves the whole drive by signature to find what the file system has already forgotten. Anything recoverable by name comes back with its name; the rest gets carved.
- Quick Scan — only worth it on a healthy NTFS drive right after an accidental delete or an emptied Recycle Bin, when you want original names, folders and timestamps back fast.
Carving reads every sector, so it takes longer than an index lookup. The app shows live progress, throughput and ETA while it runs, and if the card is starting to fail, bad-sector tolerance means it skips the unreadable spots and keeps going rather than aborting the whole scan.
Recover to a different drive — always
Writing recovered files back onto the drive you're recovering from is the fastest way to destroy the very clips still waiting to be carved. RecoverHelper blocks same-drive output so this can't happen by accident, but you should have the destination ready before you start.
- Recovering from an SD card? Send the output to your computer's internal drive.
- Recovering from an internal drive? Send it to an external disk or a second USB stick.
- Give yourself room — video files are large, and a carved set can include partial clips you'll want to sort through.
Use preview before committing. Since carving doesn't restore names, previewing is how you tell the clip you're after from the twenty you don't need.

One limit worth being straight about: a quick format doesn't erase data and carving works fine afterward, but a full format or secure erase that overwrites every sector is not recoverable by any software. If that's what happened, the scan will tell you quickly — and it costs nothing to find out.
